Like most women, I fell in love with makeup at a very young age. I remember watching my grandmother apply false lashes and bright red lipstick every Sunday morning for church. I was always so in awe of her glamour, poise, and confidence. She was a cosmetologist so I spent my teenage years picking her brain about the beauty industry and spent hours every night recreating makeup looks I saw in magazines on myself.

A decade ago, I decided to try my hand at doing makeup for others. I practiced as much as I could, dedicated hours upon hours to learning how to perfect this craft. For a while, makeup was just a hobby. I had always looked at makeup as a fun thing to do, not realizing that I could turn this hobby into a career. I vividly remember doing a brides makeup, handing her a mirror, and seeing her burst into tears. Hearing her say she’s never felt so beautiful before made me have the realization that this hobby was my divine calling in life.

I believe God gave me this talent to serve as more than just a makeup artist or entrepreneur; I am a therapist, a friend, a hype-woman, or whatever else my clients need me to be in that moment for them to feel beautiful, safe, and respected. To me, it’s about more than just applying makeup, it’s about integrity and building a long lasting relationship. Throughout my career, I’ve been blessed enough to be able to establish a log of repeat clients, do makeup for countless brides, as well as a few celebrities and politicians. I’m always eager to see what door God will open next!

Mel

Licensed cosmetologist

As a little girl I always loved getting my hair braided the whirling of marcels, the smell of relaxer and freshly sprayed hairspray all brought me joy! Walking into a salon, was like walking into a symphony to me. The composer was the hairstylist and the music was the dryers, sizzles and laughter of the women getting their hair done. Clearly I would immediately get my license and start doing hair right? WRONE, I thought doing hair was just fun, not something I could live on. So I followed a traditional path and did what I was told would secure my suability. I went to collage got and had fun, doing hair on campus!

My journey as a student was long and confusing. I felt out of place and on an unpromising path. Though my degree was in something that is highly requested and favorable, I found no promise in it. With my degree in hand, I walked in the world to get the final checkmark in the plan of life. The job! Just like my college career, my search was long and without promise. I wandered around working menial jobs to make ends try to meet. Seven years passed and I had no money and no promising career. One day, feeling frustrated and like a failure, I hear God ask me one simple question. “What is it that you really want to do?” That was never a question I asked myself before. With joy in my heart, I answered, “Hair.”

Artist Shout Out

 Racheal Adetayo

Artist | Inventor | Mental Health Advocate

Growing up, I have always been interested in creative things. I loved arts and crafts as a kid and pretty much any project that involved using my hands and imagination. With a degree in Management and Information Systems and being of African culture  it was always encouraged to be a success.

While in college, I had many side hustles. From teaching dance to making custom jewelry to selling crochet baby blankets and eventually dabbling in baby photography where makeup artistry caught my eye.

All of these experiences prepared me for my next creative endeavor: becoming the inventor of Lippiebook, an organizational tool for artists to transport their gear. My purpose has always been to make everyone shine, working with other makeup artists onset and supporting them off of it—advocating for mental health especially within our creative community.
